It’s funny how I won’t understand how something truly works until someone asks a question about said thing. When I see their question and want to give them an answer, all of the vague and disconnected conceptual comprehension floating around in my head suddenly becomes structured and organized as my mind immediately begins analyzing the cause-and-effect structure of what is being discussed.

For example, during a discussion about short-throw shifters.

Me, thinking to myself: “A short throw shifter kit shortens shift throws...somehow...”

Other person: “Hey, how does this affect [insert causal effect removed from core operation of said shifter kit]?”

Me: [Wanting to answer, I suddenly and subconsciously analyze exactly why a shifter kit would or would not affect this particular thing. To do so, I have to know how and why the shifter kit functions on a fundamental level before I can understand how said kit would affect what the person asked about,] “Well...technically it would, because [explain reasoning based on aformentioned mental deconstruction and analysis].”

So...I only have a vague idea of how things work until I am faced with needing to explain said thing to someone else. Is this common or am I just weird?

To me it works backwards, in my head something can make sense and then when I try explaining it using the same ideas, the other person doesn’t understand it. This is most often when explaining Thermodynamics to my mother, don’t ever try explaining Thermodynamics to your parents, it doesn’t end well.

It happens.

Maybe it’s a form of inspiration, that gets the creative juices flowing and allows you to come at it from a different perspective. Kinda neat to experience.

Sometimes the question is interesting enough that instead of waiting for someone else to chime in, I’ll just go and Google it myself. If no one’s answered it by the time I come back, I can answer the question myself, which makes it look like I’m smarter than I really am lol.

If you’ve ever watched ‘Fate Stay Night’, if often feels like when Emiya uses his ‘trace’ ability on an object.

i find when i’m trying to describe a part to a customer over the phone , i keep using my hands a lot , not thinking about the poor customer on other end of phone who can’t see my hand gestures.

but the techs at work find it hilarious , when i’m talking and my hands are going berserk.

There’s no better way to fully solidify concepts in your mind than the explain/teach them to someone else.

When I was in school I’d go to office hours for help on challenging problems. While I waited I’d help other students with ones I’d already done. Sometimes while teaching them I’d have a brainwave and figure out how to do that last problem myself.
